Since the 1970s, shoppers have flocked to that American institution, the indoor mall, a fortress of commerce, fully enclosed and shut off from the outside world. Under its roof, there's little hint of the natural world, no breeze to push away the strong scents of Sbarro and Abercrombie & Fitch cologne. Tiled pathways and glass guardrails guide people from one Wetzel's Pretzels to the next. Here's the Latest Plan to Turn the Enormous West LA VA Into a Residential Community


Back in October, the Department of Veterans Affairs released a draft version of their plan to refurbish their almost 400-acre West LA campus. Now, their updated plan to create about 1,900 housing units (both permanent and temporary) on the land has been revealed, says the LA Times. Some of the older buildings on the campus now would be adaptively reused as housing, meaning that with the right approvals, permanent housing could be open by next year. In addition to developing housing for veterans, the new campus would provide a variety of specialized support services to help all vets (not just the homeless ones) with everything from legal matters to mental health.  > Read full article

First Look at the Huge Mixed-Use Complex Set to Rise By the Expo Line Extension in West LA


The Martin Expo Town Center would put a big new residential/office/retail complex a block away from the Expo Line extension's Expo/Bundy station, on, somewhat poetically, the site of a Cadillac/GMC dealership. Plans first surfaced years ago, but now we're finally seeing what it might look like, and it's pretty dramatic. Urbanize LA says that the complex would replace the dealership with more than 500 residential units (either apartments for rent or condos), a 10-story tower with office and retail space, well over a thousand parking spaces, and a big pedestrian paseo to boot.  > Read full article

Mapping the Multi-Story Building Boom on West LA's Sawtelle


Though it was officially designated as Sawtelle Japantown by the LA City Council this year, the West LA neighborhood of Sawtelle might soon be known more for it's hulking apartment complexes than Japanese culture. Sawtelle Boulevard has recently been inundated with proposals for multi-story housing projects that would dwarf older homes and change the character, not to mention the height, of the neighborhood.
